CAUTION: THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS AS THIS IS MY FIRST ATTEMPT TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS!

Went to theater to watch Singam with not much expectations other than it’ll be a good entertainer. I reached there on time but the stupid theater guys started the film five minutes early… Missed some portion n reached there when the song Naane Indhiran was about to start. This trend is there in almost all Tamil superstar films these days. The protagonist’s main introduction along a song most commonly a fast number wit him reacting about things like social evils n all. Is that really needed? Even if they’re superstars why making them look like super humans?

Well back to the story…
After watching the film, i felt its a mixture of Surya’s Vel and Kakka kakka. On the first, one of his roles was of a villager who is a favorite of everybody and in the second a Truthful police officer. In this, he’s both!

Durai Singam (Surya) is a Sub Inspector who’s darling of people of his native village nalloor in Toothukudi and who had asked for a posting there itself because of that. He was leading a peaceful life at there until he comes across Mayilvaganom a don in Chennai (Prakash Raj). He tries to threaten Durai Singam in station once but is abused by the local people who love and care for Singam. This mayilvaganom transfers Singam to Chennai for teaching him a lesson. And the story is all about the battle between the two. Comedian Vijay’s mannerisms are funny as always. But stuff like those are like repeating over and over in all the Tamil films at present.
Nice visualizations of song sequences. But I think Anushka’s costumes are not OK i think… Especially in one song En Idhayam she was more exposed. Too much skimpy attire…
Why actresses are showing off their skin like this? She plays “Kavya” in this film and unlike other heroines who are just meant to dance with heroes in recent films, she has her own part of acting to do. She motivates her love not to feel defeated and to react. I think that skin show wasn’t necessary for her to stay in this film.

Surya was as awesome as always in this film… Such a natural actor he is. But I’ll say the roles he did in Sillundru Oru Kadhal and Vaaranam Aayiram are the best ever. Roles which are more human.
Just as i said, Anushka was good. She did justice to the role. Prakashraj is also awesome! He’s a really versatile actor. Hero, Hero’s friend n comedian, villain, brother of heroine is there anything else? He’ll do that too. The music in the films are also nice. “Stole My Heart – Unplugged Version” really stole my heart the very first time i heard. And the numbers Kadhal Vandhale, Singam Singam are also nice to rock the party… Overall this is a great movie… I liked this very much. Always expecting Surya to do more human roles like in Sillundru Oru Kaadhal and Vaaranam Aayiram.

My overall rating to this movie – 4/5

I have seen the trailer of Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya (VTV) some time before and I liked it. I’m glad that i made time to watch VTV. Check out the trailer here.

Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya starts right from the bottom of the heart. Its an intense love story. Thrisha is awesome in the movie. I still can’t figure out why women look so pretty in saree . Simbu turns out to be Mr Nice Guy, and this is his only movie I liked.

Karthik (Simbu), a mechanical engineer, dreams of becoming a film director, and meets Jessy (Trisha), a Malayalee Christian girl, who is an IT professional working in Polaris. And it is love at first sight. She lives on the top floor with her strict father (Babu Antony), mother and an aggressive brother, while Karthik and his family have rented out the lower portion of the house.

Thrisha plays the girl next door, lovely, makes any twenty something guy lovestruck at the first sight itself. Secretive glances make way to obvious glances.Karthik typically represents a guy in twenty something who is unable to control his emotions.

The story is totally packed with love, emotions, surprises, lots of travel (Chennai, , Kerala, Goa and New York ). Choreography, Songs (ARR magic yet again), Screenplay awesome work, with wonderful execution. It dragged a bit in the second half but its ok.

Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya – A different Love Story, Yet again…

If you are wondering how it is different, better watch it; and Love is beautiful but can be painful too…

Rating: 4.5/5

Footnote: It gave me something to work on, wait and see…

This is the first post under the Book Review Category. I am particular it should be about a well accepted book. This reason made me to post about Chethan Bagath’s 2 states –The Story of my marriage which I read a month before. With little difficulty I got a copy within 2 weeks after its release.

The author admits the story is slightly abstracted from his own experiences and dedicates this book to his in-laws. The story resumes from where the Five Point Someone left of. It’s told through hero Krish, a Punjabi boy who falls for his IIM-A classmate Tamil girl, Ananya. The story begins with Krish’s life at IIM-A from where he happened to meet Ananya and latter decide to marry her. The story progress with the author’s and his lover’s attempts to please each others parents. Although Krish and Ananya are exceptions to their North Indian and South Indian clan, the parents of each are pictured as orthodox Indians. Author exploits the “unity in diversity” quality of the country. Tamilian and Punjabi culture are well illustrated. The struggle each faces to win each others family is made easy digestible with the extravagance of humor.

Krish’s attempt to win Ananya’s family implicitly tells how good professionals solve problems whether it’s professional or personal. The author assures the book comes under the head ‘fiction’ by its dramatic end with little suspense.

Synopsis by the author:

Love marriages around the world are simple:

Boy loves girl. Girl loves boy.
They get married.

In India, there are a few more steps:

Boy loves Girl. Girl loves Boy.
Girl’s family has to love boy. Boy’s family has to love girl.
Girl’s Family has to love Boy’s Family. Boy’s family has to love girl’s family.
Girl and Boy still love each other. They get married.
