This New Year welcomed me with hepatic schedules. Glimpse at my Google calendar left a question to me ” am I gonna do all dese things …” .Of those busy schedules one was an interactive session with the leaders of the IT industry. The seminar was organized by North Malabar Chamber Of commerce and the session was on last Saturday (02/01/10) at Hotel Blue Nile, Kannur
Faculties and student representatives from most of the colleges of this part of the world were there. The topic for the day was “how to put kannur in the IT map of India” Being there as a representative of my college, ‘how to put kannur’ in the said place was not my concern but was looking to clear all ma doubts regarding the various placement programs etc and put Placement Cell’s problems to their notice. The delegates were:
1) Ajith Balakrishnan CEO & Chairman, Rediff.com
2) Purushotaman , Regional Director ,NASSCOM
3) Binu Pazhoor ,CEO, Cyber Park
4) Shilen Saugan ,Managing Director ,Arbitron India
With the extravagance of words like ‘CSR’, ‘taking industry to campus’, ‘bridge the gap between teachers and students’ etc the session found pace. When the interactive session started nothing could stop Eby Sir. He started with “I am Eby David…placement officer of College of….” I was wondering at that person, all the speakers before and after him tried to grab the attention of the gathering by illustrating the Degrees and high qualifications they possessed. My beloved teacher was very much different; he had half a dozen or more abbreviations to be suffixed by the name. Illustrating those degrees was enough for him to frame the first 3 -4 sentences of his interaction. Yet he did not put a word on that. But his questions and suggestions were greeted with wild applause. With that College Of Engg Tly made its presence feel like anything. When Eby Sir was unsatisfied by the discussions and answers, he got himself vanished from the picture with the aid of an open walk out.
Together with Eby Sir other teachers (our colg) and vinitha left ;leaving Fyroos, Pratheek and me as the soldiers for the rest of war of words. We were silent in the beginning; we anticipated that some creative solutions would come up. But the discussion continued by blaming industry and college each other. Soon we took the shoes of active interrogatives. We insisted on Eby Sir’s ideas and thoughts.
By 1.30 pm the program was over. Many were busy with refreshment but certainly not we three for that was not our major concern. We met all the delegates. Ajith Balakrishnan patted me on ma shoulder and told “you asked very good questions….keep it up”. My /our questions were not in any regard the good one’s he had come across in his age, but he was sure his complement would boost ma confidence. So did it. I was feeling like ‘out from a tunnel’. We discussed our problems with all the delegates there. Almost all showed the willingness to help us. By the time we leave we were sure College Of Engg Tly made a significant presence in the session earlier by Placement officer and later by the placement cords. By 1.45 Pratheek and me left .It took another 15-20mins for Fyroos to leave the hall. We placement cords had an awesome day and we decided to go ahead with some of the creative ideas that evolved out.
Yesterday Fyroos and me were discussing about those suggestions put forwarded by the leaders of the Industry. We were at Eby Sir’s desk for help in that regard. At that time he had some other thing to tell. One of the delegates of the other day called Eby Sir three times since Monday morning!!! (I am not mentioning that kind hearted person’s name as it’s against the policy of CGPU). He has shown interest in our students. That was a great +ve response and we expect seeds of +ve changes would grow well at the top of Koondoormala…..

wow…great….did u meant me ,the one who went for refreshment?
Would like to give a commment/suggestion for the placement cell in your college. The future trend in the industry will not be to pick bright students from the campus but to pick students who do well in the subjects that matters for the respective firms. Many big product based MNC's have their own campus alliance programs thru which they try to find the right talent. I believe some colleges in Kerala has already signed up for such programs and are poised to reap the benefits.
