The US has it, the UK has it and Japan has it. But India doesn’t have it. What is it? A symbol or identity for the national currency. That is soon going to change. India’s currency is rupee and is represented as Rs or Re or simply INR (standing for Indian National Rupee). India has decided it is about time the currency gets its own identity. Now it is in the final stages of selecting a symbol for its currency.

Many currencies do not have a currency symbol. A currency symbol is not mandatory and all countries follow ISO 4217 or the three letter code to define global currency. For the US it is USD and for India it is INR. However having a symbol for currency is considered a status symbol and the Euro attributes a part of its success to the symbol. Status symbol or not, having a symbol makes it easily recognizable and could well be a catalyst needed to push the global recognition agenda – which Indian needs very badly.

A contest was held last year where designs were solicited from residents. A fFew rules were set so that the symbol reflects India’s rich history along with being easily written. Here are the five symbols which were selected and presented before India’s union cabinet. One of these symbols will become the symbol for the Indian rupee.
