The title of this article might be familiar to all of you people as you’ll have studied A.G Gardiner’s awesome Essay on the same title in school days…
I’m using this title as i felt there’s nothing more suitable than this for my article.
You’ll know it after finishing this.
Just recently, on June 26th to be precise, Kerala High Court imposed a ban on conducting political meetings and processions on public roads.
Just imagine, well there is no need to imagine actually, just recall from your memory, any of the numerous situations when you were stuck in the traffic jam caused due to some political show off of some party on road when you had to reach at a particular place for something big. Say some important interview or some examination. What was your mentality at that time? How all did you curse those people for blocking the road like that? Must have cursed them like you’ve cursed nobody else before right?
I guess those people who travel on MG Road through Kerala Secretariat at Thiruvananthapuram must have cursed more like that… You just pass through that area and you’ll know why. The footpath on the side of road are occupied by numerous tents of people who protest for various matters. So the people who are meant to use those also forced to share the road with vehicles, if there’s some procession of some political party, the entire region is blocked completely! Even snails will reach from one point to another faster than the vehicles stuck in the traffic then.
According to Kerala High Court, these political show off on public roads not only affect the road traffic, but chances of accidents to occur are also great. Yes, it does… Chances of some vehicle to run over on people protesting is there. But one more thing also arises. Daily commuters who are already in a hurry will be pressurized more due to this time loss and they’ll eventually increase the speed of the vehicle.
Since their mind is already tensed, chances are more for them to loose their concentration while driving in high speed and it might give rise to accidents.
If the roads are hijacked by political parties for their so called show offs and all, where’ll the vehicles travel? For that, i guess new facilities should be implemented on bikes cars busses and all for making them fly for some distance so that they can cover the blocked area through air. Sadly that kind of technology is not yet in existance. So at present only thing to do is to let these vehicles continue the snails race whenever there is some traffic block.
Kerala High Court had took a good step for preventing this social menace. I hope this atleast reduces the troubles faced by public due to this even if it didn’t remove it completely.
I’ll say there should be separate plots exclusively for such political show offs. Like some grounds or something like that.
And those people who may want to witness these events can go and watch it there. There is a bright side also. If some nominal entry fee or something is also collected from visitors, it may even give rise to some new kind of tourism. And we can name it “Political Tourism” foreigners coming to visit the political show offs and all. How does that sound? ![]()
Thus it won’t be a problem to the public and the chance of parties to show their strength also.
As soon as this ban came, almost all political parties joined hands together against this decision. Some said that this is an utter foolish decision, some said thats its against their right to express the feelings and all…
Yes it controls to some extent, one of the ways of political parties with self proclaimed right of torturing people for telling them that they’re still in command.
