Panda USB Vaccine by Panda Security is a free tool to protect your PC from virus attack from USB Flash Drives. The program automatically detects any newly connected USB Flash Drives and automatically removes autorun.inf file in the flash drive. Also it creates another autorun.inf file in the drive which prevents further spreading of viruses. The newly created autorun.inf file cannot be edited nor deleted by virus or users.
The technique of spreading virus when a newly inserted USB Flash Drive is as follows.
When a user connects UFD (USB Flash Drive), the UFD may have autorun.inf file at its root. This file contains a script for executing a program when the flash drive is connected to a Windows based system. The program is run automatically even when the user tries to open the flash drive through My Computer.
‘Virus manufacturers’ used this exploit to spread viruses through USB flash drives. They modifed autorun.inf and added their virus’ name into this file. When connected to a PC, this virus is automatically executed.
Microsoft confirmed this problem and released Autorun update for Windows XP, Windows Vista: Windows Autorun Update Kb967715 on January 2009
I recommend downoading this update for your system and disable autoplay in your system. If you’re running on Windows 7, this update is preinstalled and you should bother about disabling autoplay.
Use Panda USB Vaccine to disable autoplay and remove any autorun.inf in flash drives.
