First of all, it took a little bit of time to write this post. Not for the typing part
Its just that, for two weeks i was reading reviews and comments from the web for a newly released game called Assassin’s Creed II (Check it out. Its an awesome game). Now you might be thinking whats so special about this game. Yea! its just another PC game with high end graphics and lots of adventure. But the thing about the game is its DRM(Digital Rights Management) created by one of the largest game marketing company called Ubisoft.
Now what is so special about this DRM??
As u all know if a software/movie/game is released, its pirated version will be available in the internet within at least 48 hours of its release. Am i right? The special part of the game comes here. Its been almost a month since the game is released and a complete cracked version is still not available in the internet. Why? Because the developers created a new kind of DRM. In order to play the game you must be connected to the Ubisoft DRM servers(even though its not a multiplayer game). If the connection is lost, you need to start it all over the again. This DRM policy created one hell of problems in the last two weeks.
The log is as follows.. :
On March 03rd : One of the best action adventure game called Assassin’s Creed 2 is launched (sequel of Assassin’s Creed)
On March 04th : After 24 hours, a pirate team claimed that they have cracked the game’s new DRM policy. But actually that was an epic fail. It was not fully cracked.
On March 08th : Rage among pirates & pirate users led to a Ubisoft’s server attack by hackers. This led millions of legitimate players who brought the game, unplayable for a whole day.
On March 10th : Another server attack. Rage continuous among legitimate users also.
On March 15th : Server attack continuous..
On March 22nd : One of the largest online game distributing company Steam took out the game from their distribution because of the DRM.
Continuous…
This is just another story in the gaming industry to prevent piracy. Same continuous in the field of software & movies.
From my personal opinion, Ubisoft’s new anti- piracy measure is good. But its a little bit difficult for the users to have a constant internet connection to play the game. May the only option they got is this. Even though it had some starting problems, hope developers will get to something more stable. May be in the future also they will implement the same for the upcoming games.
Now my question to you guys. PIRACY: GOOD or BAD??
Think in both ways
Just consider that you are a software developer, You created a software with years of effort. And when you released the software for marketing, a group of guys steal it and made it available free in the internet. How do you feel about it?
OR the other way
Just as a normal internet user, Why should i buy a software which is available free in the internet??
So what you guys say?? Piracy good or bad??
