Ragging – Some Thoughts

What Is Ragging?

According to Honorable Supreme Court Of India,

“Ragging is any disorderly conduct, whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any student, indulging in rowdy or in disciplined activities which cause or are likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the psyche of a fresher or a junior student”

All of you know that ragging is the biggest menace that can happen in an institution these days. You can just imagine how much vulgar these mannerisms can get. How worse the consequences can go. Yes such pathetic practices should be wiped out completely from campuses for sure. Freshers will be taking one of the biggest steps in life while entering the college. From the shackles of school life, they’ll be coming to the magical college life. If something really bad happens to them in the beginning itself, they’re finished. Their self confidence will be lost completely and it’ll be really hard for them to get through. I said this much to say about the effects of extreme ragging.

Just like a coin having two sides, I’ll say that its not that bad if intensity is very little. Without ANY of foul plays which will shatter the fresher minds, they won’t be harmful as i said above. I’ve once sung a song for senior guys on my fresher days and even danced before them. But since it was a TORTURE FOR THEM, they didn’t come near me at all after that. It was fun even for me at that time and it didn’t bother me at all. But it surely did one big thing for me. It broke the ice between us and made me bold. I’m not saying all the freshers should be compelled to sing and dance before seniors at all. The capability to withstand these might be different for different people.

I feel that there should be some interaction between freshers and seniors. I feel that only after that, a friendly campus atmosphere will come.

Nowadays, senior students are banned from nearing fresher class rooms, college busses which are meant for freshers & even canteen during fresher’s lunch time. Things have come to a state that senior guys are running away when seeing fresher people. If some fresher guy files a complaint against him, his life’ll be spoilt na? Thats what happening over there at the campus. Freshers seeing seniors as aliens and seniors looking back as nightmares.

I strongly feel that this condition should be changed. If each student decides in his/her mind that he/she will not indulge in any act of ragging the freshers or will not encourage the same and decide that they’ll maintain friendly relationship with his/her juniors without any discrimination, there won’t be any ragging in the campus and no need of so called anti ragging squads also.

“Only thing which’ll be present will be a nice, calm, friendly campus where all the students will study, dream and celebrate irrespective of any differences of being a junior or senior. ”
