20/08/2010:
It’s a beautiful day today. Onam celebration at our own College of Engineering Thalassery. For final year students like us, this is the last onam celebration in our campus. Lots of memories, dreams etc are attached to this campus.
Onam celebration is perhaps the only day when each single student is at his/her traditional best!
A day when they make an impact on others with their stunning looks which were hidden in the boring uniform. This day is the only day when most of the people in college return to the malayali tradition. Girls wearing Set Saree to become typical malayali ladies and boys wearing Mundu & Shirt to become eligible bachelors. Yeah it’s a pain to get into those, most of the people might be wearing it once a year or so. But it looks awesome on most of the people.
10:00am – Students of all classes started making pookalam. It’s a two hour long competition and they’re trying to make their pookalam the best. The class which creates magic with these flowers wins.
Pookalam Competition
11:15Am – Pookalam of almost all the classes are over by now. Let’s check the works in each class now.
S7 EC1 – The design looks really good.
S7EC2 – Just like S7 EC1, design here also is looking good. Tried to bring Tricolor and Gandhiji in the centre.
S5 EC1 – Design is just awesome! A snake boat’s impression is made in the centre.
S5 EC2 – Their work also is looking good. Kathakali’s impression on the pookalam is looking great.
S3 EC1 – These guys also managed to create a wonderful pookalam.
S3 EC2 – They also proved that they’re not bad in creativity.
Looking at the 6 batches of EC I feel that this year’s competition is going to be tough. My vote in these classes in EC Block goes to S3 EC1.
By that time Maveli came to Electronics & Communication block for blessing everyone.
Can see everyone dancing in front of EC Block, so much enthusiasm, it’s just great.
Entering Computer Science and Information Technology batches.
S7CSE – Was just stunned looking at the pookalam there. It’s just awesome. A beautiful girl’s picture is made out of flowers. Have to tell, awesome creativity.
S7 IT – A beautiful impression of lord ganesha is present in their work.
S5CSE – An awesome design work is there in the pookalam.
S5 IT – Same like others they’re also looking great.
S3CSE – Nice atmosphere here, pookalam design looks great.
S3IT – Is also not bad, they’re also looking great.
This is so wonderful, so much talents in these young minds? Really happy to see various creative works so far. My vote in CS-IT Block goes to S7 CSE…
Over to Electrical & Electronics Engineering – Mechanical Engineering block.
S5EEE – Superb work here, a winners material in here.
S3EEE – They also had done their best in presenting an awesome pookalam.
S7EEE – Was the best of the lot. Simply superb. Looks like last year champions are all set to win this time also.
Stars of royal mech in S3, S5,S7 didn’t take part in Pookalam competition but they were the showstoppers… They were the main people who made the festive atmosphere alive. They just rock! Slim Maveli and Fat Michael Jackson were the contribution of Mex. They were really funny.
Administrative block & First Year Classes
An awesome pookalam was there in administrative block done by college union. Let us check out the first year classes in which people are celebrating their first onam in college life.
S1S2EEE – Their pookalam is also stunning like others.
S1S2 ME – The sole competitors from Mechanics Branch for pookalam. They proved that boys are not bad
their pookalam is looking cool.
S1S2 EC1 – They also got an awesome piece of work with them.![]()
S1S2 EC2 – Their pookalam is simple and looking good.
S1S2 CS – They had the best design in first year department. Looks cool…
S1S2 IT – They’re also very much into the competition and are in a pretty good position.
This is a tough competition between S7 EEE & S7 CSE… Have to see who‘ll be victorious.
Theeta Matsaram
How much bitter gourd and green chilly can you eat? This competition was all about this. It was a tough fight.
Balloon Pottikkal
This is a ladies only competition along with Musical Chair. In balloon pottikal, the girl who saves the balloon given to her from attempts of her opponents to burst it till the end will be winner. Many girls participated in this event which turned out to be a real cat fight. Rasna Miss also was a contestant but she was out in first round itself. Better luck next time miss.
Musical Chair
Another ladies only event, no explanations needed as everyone is that much familiar with this. Many participants were there but at first it seemed like they didn’t had anything for lunch. No energy at all. Everyone were just walking lazily around the chairs. When rounds progressed, it got better.
Uriyadi
This was the most awaited competition of the day I guess. Perhaps the most challenging one which demands proper co-ordination and flexibility of the team mates. It started raining when this event was about to start but it didn’t hamper the spirit of the contestants. A team per class and it was a tough fight. The team which breaks the pot within minimum duration of time wins. Two people got injured in between this competition and they were taken to hospital. Hope they get better soon.
Kambavali
Separate competition for boys and girls and thus two teams per class. This was the assumed to be the game plan but because of rain only the ladies competition was present. It was a very fierce competition.
Pillow Fight
Fighting with a pillow sitting on a pole, it was really funny competition.

These are the available results of the competitions

Some more thoughts…
A day completely free from boring lectures, assignments and record works. People are enjoying this day to the maximum. Feeling really happy to see so many smiling beautiful faces all over. It is really soothing. Really had a memorable day to cherish all the time. Hope the smiles in everyone’s face don’t fade. Wishing you all a very happy onam.
